That bald patch is his "grease gland". Males will get very dirty there and it will get blocked if not cleaned properly. Mild washing up liquid, diluted in warm water should be applied to clean it. It's best done if you stand them in your bath and let them paddle about in shallow water with it in and just apply some of the washing up liquid to the gland and rub gently to work the grease off. Then get a thin rat-tailed type of comb and comb the fur to take away any excess clumps of grease. Rinse the fur with clean warm water and towel dry. You needn't put anything on it because this can also block the gland as well.

I've owned guinea-pigs for over 13 years and most of them were males so I've cleaned my fair share of grease glands.

From your note Lisa, you do not say whether the patch is bald or the fur is broken. I am taking a leap here and guessing that the patch is bald! If it isn’t then this might be a behavioural problem called Barbering. In which case what I am suggesting below is still relevant but I would also give them essences to change their emotional states. Let me know if this is the case!
If you have seen a vet and his suggestions have not worked, I suggest you try Neem. Get a cold pressed product. You can buy it from this company www.baldwins.co.uk
Before you apply the Neem, wash his bum in warm water containing 2-3 drops of tea-tree oil. Ensure he is dry and then apply the Neem directly to his bum. Neem does not have a pleasant smell but go with it ! You will need to cover the area with a thin layer of Neem. Apply the Neem every other day for 6-8 days. If you feel that the problem is getting worse-STOP using the Neem. Otherwise continue and monitor. If Neem is going to work, you will see result in 4 days. Parsley started to grow fur after 4 days and it took about 4 applications of Neem to totally resolve the problem for him.
Unlike essential oils Neem will not damage oral mucosa so is safe for them to continue to groom and lick the Neem. However, it really doesn’t taste nice so if barbering is the problem, the Neem may put them off !
Ensure that your piggys are both sitting/sleeping on dry bedding.
Let me know how you get on.

I have a guinea pig with a similar patch on his bum and his brother has a smaller patch. I'd be greatful for any advice you have as the vet didn't have a clue! I have tried a spot on for lice and fleas and tried bathing with Nizoral shampoo, neither of which seem to have done any good.

Thanks

Grey Spider Flower is an essence (Like homeopathy). It generally comes in liquid form. Essences change abnormal behaviour. It doesn't change NORMAL behaviour but will reduce instincts in some animals. In terms of grey Spider Flower it reduces fear. Guinea pigs naturally have a degree of fear. In the case of a guinea pig I would use this essence if my pig (or another animal) was OVER fearful and displaying behaviours such as panic, being glued to the spot, excessive shaking or aggression (which is VERY abnormal behaviour in pigs). You can either put this in their water bottle or squirt it directly into their mouths. Essences come with glass pipettes but you must NEVER put this into any pets mouths as they can bite the glass pipette. This will lacerate their mouths and worse they can swallow the broken pieces.

We at Broadstone supply essences for pets and farm animals. We have been in the essences business for 10 years treating both animals and their humans. Our website is under re-construction at present but we can make up a bespoke essence for your pet if you call us on 01594 836108.

Great lens! Very interesting to learn about the natural techniques you use for your pets. I am wondering where can one locate grey spider flower and how much do you give them? Do they consider this a treat and gobble up?
Cheers
